Local cattle business gets more support
The government has set aside 133 million baht for eight projects to improve the competitiveness of the local beef cattle industry and alleviate the impact of free trade agreements with Australia and New Zealand over the next 12 years.
Chutima Bunyapraphasara, director-general of the Trade Negotiations Department, said the funds would come from the Agriculture Ministry and from the Commerce Ministry's FTA Fund, set up to help firms affected by trade pacts.
The Thai government has declared beef a sensitive product under which it needs special protection if imports from Australia and New Zealand exceed specified volumes, with tariff elimination delayed until 2020.
